Blue Jay Bhangra is Johns Hopkins University’s one and only co-ed bhangra team! With its origins in India’s northwestern region of Punjab, Bhangra is a lively folk dance that has enjoyed immense international popularity in the recent years. Based on a mix of traditional Punjabi music fused with Western styles, modern bhangra features heavy drum beats, colorful costumes, and complex formations.
Founded in the 1990s, Blue Jay Bhangra was formerly known as Hopkins Hareepa and is one of the oldest collegiate bhangra teams in the United States. On the JHU campus, we strive to promote the energy and liveliness of bhangra through various dance performances. Nationally, we represent Johns Hopkins University on a cultural level at dance competitions across the nation.
