The Carnegie Mellon chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is part of a national nonprofit organization working to improve global sustainability and quality of life for underdeveloped communities around the world. Our organization engineers sustainable solutions to development issues in local and international communities, while creating transformative experiences and responsible leaders.
With students from every engineering discipline, including civil, mechanical, material science, and even computer science and architecture, our organization brings great minds together to resolve pressing issues concerning vital aspects of life, such as power, shelter, and infrastructure. Our members gain valuable experience applying their coursework and collaborating on large scale projects that allow them to give back to the global community.
Some of the projects our members are currently working on include:
- Designing and constructing a lighting system for a community in Nyadire, Zimbabwe powered by a sustainable, reliable energy source to improve safety and overall quality of life for residents
- Developing an automated system to turn recycled plastic bottles into thatch roofing for homes in temperate climates, such as Ecuador or Vietnam, as a cheap, eco-friendly alternative to natural thatch or modern tin roofing
- Researching an alternative way for coffee farmers to supplement the income they earn from coffee beans to boost revenue and increase workers' pay and quality of life
