The Black Engineers Society is a preprofessional student run organization with a mission "to recruit, retain, and release qualified minorities in the fields of computer science, engineering, mathematics, and physical sciences." We were founded in 1975 by a group of minority engineer majors who saw the need for a support system in order for Black engineers to successfully acquire their engineering degrees on the University of Maryland, College Park campus. BES became part of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) when it was founded in the Spring of 1975. Our membership has expanded to encompass all S.T.E.M. majors.
